Brand Concept

The character "巽" (Tatsumi) represents "wind" in the world of Yi Jing (I Ching). Wind flows through even the smallest gaps and travels freely, connecting people across great distances. Inspired by this meaning and the name of our founding location, the Tatsumi brand was born.

Tatsumi is a brand dedicated to bringing handcrafted handbags to the world, made with Nishijin-ori— a traditional Japanese textile with over 1,000 years of history. Each handbag is carefully crafted by skilled artisans, preserving the essence of Japanese craftsmanship.

　

President's Greeting

My father, Yukio Takayanagi, began manufacturing Nishijin-ori handbags in Osaka in 1983.

At that time, mass production and mass consumption were the norm in Japan. In the handbag industry, efficiency was prioritized, with multiple craftsmen producing separate parts, which were then assembled in bulk at factories.

However, since its founding, Tatsumi has taken a different approach. We have always followed a method where a single artisan is responsible for crafting an entire lot of handbags from start to finish. This process ensures that each artisan takes full responsibility for their work, leading to exceptional quality and craftsmanship.

Today, our Nishijin-ori handbags are not only paired with kimono but have also gained recognition worldwide as elegant evening bags that complement dresses beautifully.
