My father, Yukio Takayanagi, started making Nishijin-ori handbags in Osaka in 1983.

At that time, mass production and mass consumption were the norm in Japan. In the handbag industry, it was common practice for multiple craftsmen to produce separate parts, which were then assembled in bulk at factories, prioritizing efficiency.

However, Tatsumi has followed a different approach since its founding. We have always adopted a method where a single artisan is responsible for crafting an entire lot of handbags from start to finish. This approach ensures that each craftsman takes full responsibility for their work, resulting in exceptional quality and craftsmanship.

　　

Today, our Nishijin-ori handbags are not only paired with traditional kimono but have also gained recognition worldwide as evening bags that complement elegant dresses.

At Tatsumi, we use Nishijin-ori, a traditional Japanese textile with over 1,200 years of history, and our skilled artisans meticulously handcraft each handbag.
