Brand Concept

The name “Tatsumi” comes from the Japanese character 巽, which in the I Ching represents the wind. Wind moves through the smallest openings, travels across great distances, and connects people and places. The name also reflects Tatsumi, Osaka, where our workshop is based.

Tatsumi reinterprets traditional Japanese textiles such as Nishijin-ori and Oshima Tsumugi, bringing their beauty and cultural value into objects designed for contemporary dress and everyday life.

At the heart of this approach is the craftsmanship developed in our Osaka workshop since 1983. Through techniques such as edge-turning and layered bonding, we give delicate woven textiles a structured, leather-like body and dimensional form, transforming them into formal handbags, passport cases, key cases, pouches and other objects for modern life.

A Message from the CEO

My father, Yukio Takayanagi, began making Nishijin-ori handbags in Osaka in 1983.

At the time, Japan was in an era of mass production and mass consumption. In the handbag industry, efficiency often meant dividing the work among several craftspeople, with individual components produced separately and later assembled.

From the beginning, however, Tatsumi chose a different path. One craftsperson takes responsibility for a handbag from the first stage through to its completion. We believe this continuity of hand and judgement creates a deeper attention to detail and a level of quality that cannot be separated from the person who made it.

Today, I carry this philosophy forward while looking to the future.

Japan is home to remarkable textile traditions, from Nishijin-ori to Oshima Tsumugi and many others. Our role is to understand the beauty and character inherited within these textiles, and to give them new relevance in contemporary life.

As the second generation of Tatsumi, I see my responsibility as creating new forms through which these traditions can continue — not only to be preserved, but to be lived with, used and appreciated by the next generation.
